The Saskatoon area has been inhabited for some 6,000 years; however, it was not until the summer of 1883 that the first settlers began to arrive. Many of Toronto's Methodist community saw this area as a golden opportunity to escape the evils of the liquor traffic and traveled by railway from Ontario to Moose Jaw, SK, and then completed the final leg via horse-drawn cart. Subsequently in 1903 the town charter for the West Side of the river was obtained. Saskatoon was incorporated as a city on May 26, 1906 with a population of 4,500 people, and celebrated its 100th birthday in 2006.
"Saskatoon" is derived from 'mis-sask-quah-toomina', the Cree Indian name for a local indigenous berry.
